Negombo is the closest town to Colombo International Airport, just 15 minutes drive is the coastal town of Negombo, an important trading port during Portuguese and Dutch colonial era and to date one could see the remnants of that era such as Negombo Fort, Old Catholic churches and Dutch Canal.
Boat trip in the Dutch built Hamilton canal through to lagoon, fish market and fishing village is an interesting excursions when in Negombo to understand the fishermen way of life. Morning trip in the canal would give you the opportunity of seeing the traditional fishing catamarans coming to shore with their catch of the day. There are also guided cycling trips which take you to bustling markets, fishing villages, Catholic churches, Buddhist temples, Hindu Kovils and also typical residential areas. Negombo’s beach side road is full of bars, pubs and seafood restaurants so one would never get bored in Negombo, day and night there is something to do and we recommend Negombo as the ideal place to start or end your trip to Sri Lanka.
